The Era of Women is beginning… but we still have a long way to go.
These were remarks from Elizabeth Filippouli, Founder & CEO of Global Thinkers Forum, at the first Athena40 panel event in London last month.
“We have a duty to celebrate and emulate, success stories of fellow women. We have a duty to be rebels and mavericks and forward thinkers. Athena40 is a movement. It is a vision – and it is action” Elizabeth said.
Thought-leaders, businessmen and women, entrepreneurs and academics gathered to discuss ‘The Drive to Achieving Balance’.
The journey to finding equality, particularly in a business environment, is one that has been going for more than 100 years now – since the suffragette movement – however, it was made clear that, although progress has been made, women are still facing prejudice, barriers and setbacks.
This needs to change.
The Rt Hon Patricia Scotland QC, Commonwealth Secretary-General, officially presided over the UK launch of the project. She explained that 99.9% of our DNA is the same, but we all too often focus on the 0.1% that makes us different. She talked about a need for unity in making a change towards equality and that men and women equally need to be prepared to take action in order for society to change.
“Today I was determined to be with you because what Athena40 is trying to do, I think it is of pivotal importance and I am pleased to see that there are men and women in this audience because it is going to take all of us.
“Alone we are invisible, together we can be invincible.”
Attendees at the event were also lucky enough to hear snippets of an interview with renowned Egyptian writer and activist, Nawal El Saadawi. A truly humbling and powerful interview, Nawal explained that it’s the role of writers and creators to change the mindset of women and men.
She emphasised the need for everyone to have a rounded understanding of the world around them in order to be truly educated and it is fragmentation of knowledge makes people ignorant; we need to know something about all sectors and genres.
